Read to the Dog — Alamosa Library

At the Alamosa Library Every Third Tuesday
ABC Library sponsors Read to the Dog, a program which brings calm and reassuring therapy dogs to Albuquerque libraries to sit with ABQ Kids and listen to them read. The dogs provide a wet nose, a kind ear, and a relaxing atmosphere. The kids practice reading aloud and strengthen their literacy skills.
Adults do not correct a child’s reading. Parents can take the time to look for a book or sit quietly in the Read to the Dog room.
Three organizations participate in the Read to the Dog program: Pet Partners, Southwest Canine Corps, and Therapy Dogs, Inc. The volunteers are simply wonderful, kind people.
The library provides the kids with a bookmark to keep track of how many times they have read to the dog. After the bookmark is filled out, a Certificate of Completion is awarded to the reader by one of the dogs!
Learning to read doesn’t have to be “ruff!” Sometimes you just need to “paws” and take a deep breath. There’s nothing better than a good “tail.”
